bengaluru today

  • Our city is one of India’s most attractive business and investment destinations.
  • One of the fastest growing cities in India.
  • Bengaluru's growth is underpinning the ability to finance the growth and development of other parts of our state.
  • But the growth of Bengaluru has been haphazard and is now taking a toll on our city and people living here.

Rapid growth in Vehicles …Rapid growth in Vehicles

The depletion of lakes in Bengaluru from 1961 to 2011
1961: 261 Lakes
1985: 128 Lakes
2003: 81 Lakes
2007: 34 Lakes
2011:  ?

What will our city be in the future?

  1. The city is 7 Million today and is expected to reach 10 Million in about 5-6 years. (a growth of almost 50% very soon)
  2. The city’s resources has definitely crossed the limit and is getting dangerously close to depletion
  3. Infrastructure and Civic Services capacity dangerously out of step with the demand requirements created by growth.
  4. Extrapolation of today’s snapshot and a simulation of the future shows a reasonably strong scenario of urban chaos. Worse than Mumbai?
  5. The future looks uncertain despite several on-going plans for the city’s expansion.

Main concerns today

  1. Poor transparency and accountability by the city administration.
  2. Weak institutional engagement process between planners and citizens, leading to considerable litigation and frustration.
  3. Too many delays in implementation of civic projects.
  4. The quality of life has fallen drastically because of depletion of green cover, disappearance of lakes and air pollution due to increase in traffic.

What does Bengaluru need today?
For Bengaluru to have a sustainable future, the citizens of our city need to be active participants in the way the city is planned and managed.
